Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Photodynamic Therapy (PDT)

Memorial Hospital now offers Photodynamic therapy. (PDT)

What does PDT Treat? Actinic Keratosis:

What is Actinic Keratosis? An actinic keratosis is a rough, scaly patch on your skin that develops from years of exposure to the sun. It's most commonly found on your face, lips, ears, back of your hands, forearms, scalp or neck.

A small percentage of actinic keratosis lesions can eventually become skin cancer.

PDT is a 2-step (drug + blue light) treatment designed to treat actinic keratoses (AK) lesions on the arms, face or scalp. AKs are precancerous skin changes caused by chronic sun exposure. If untreated, AKs may develop into skin cancer.

LEVULAN KERASTICK and BLU-U® PDT has proven results in three well-designed clinical trials. A high percentage of patients and the majority of lesions experienced complete clearance which carried through a twelve month period. As you will see from the data below, LEVULAN KERASTICK and BLU-U PDT is an effective therapy that should be prescribed to the appropriate patient.

  • 72% of face or scalp patients were 100% clear at 12 weeks after 1 or 2 treatments3*
  • 66% of patients experienced 100% clearance of all AK lesions of the face or scalp 8 weeks after treatment3†
  • In studies, the majority of treated AK lesions of the face or scalp cleared at 3 months remained clear 12 months after treatment3‡
