One of the hardest parts about getting sick or injured isn’t just how you feel; it’s deciding where you need to go for care. Is what you’re experiencing serious enough for the Emergency Room? Or would the Walk-In Clinic or Convenient Care be a better choice?

We get it. When a fever spikes in the middle of the night or your child gets hurt on a weekend, making that decision can feel overwhelming. At Memorial Hospital, we offer several care options because every health concern is not the same. Here are some hints and insights to help you choose the right level of care.

First, Consider Severity and Timing

As a rule, the more sudden or serious your symptoms are, the more advanced the care you will need. Our care options are designed to treat you accordingly:

  • Emergency Services are for life-threatening situations.
  • The Walk-In Clinic treats common illnesses and minor injuries.
  • Convenient Care offers same-day appointments for non-emergency needs when your regular provider isn’t available.

When the ER is the Right Choice

Our Emergency Services are available 24/7 and equipped to handle serious, potentially life-threatening conditions that require immediate attention.

You should go to the ER right away if you’re experiencing chest pains, signs of a stroke such as sudden numbness or confusion, severe injuries with heavy bleeding, extreme difficulty breathing, severe allergic reactions, seizures, poisoning, or a fever over 103˚F, especially when accompanied by confusion or a stiff neck. Coughing or vomiting blood is also not something you want to put off.

Simply put, if you suddenly feel chest pain along with shortness of breath, call 911 or go directly to the ER.

When it comes to emergencies, it’s always better to play it safe. If you believe your condition could be life-threatening, don’t hesitate to seek care. We’d much rather evaluate you and find that it’s less serious than having you delay medical treatment during a real emergency.

When to Visit the Walk-In Clinic

If you need immediate care but your condition isn’t an emergency, our Walk-In Clinic is a great option. No appointment needed, just walk in. (M-Th, 4:30 pm-7 pm, Sat 7:30 am-3:30 pm)

The Walk-In Clinic is ideal for issues such as cold and flu symptoms, sore throats, ear infections, sinus or respiratory infections, urinary tract infections, low-grade fevers, minor cuts or burns, sprains, strains, rashes, or small broken bones in the fingers and toes.

Imagine your child developing an earache on a Thursday evening, or you twist your ankle playing pickleball on a Saturday morning. These are perfect examples of situations where the Walk-In Clinic can provide timely care without the cost or potential wait of an ER visit.

Typically, patients choose the Walk-In Clinic for matters they’d normally address with their primary care provider but cannot wait for an appointment.

When to Choose Convenient Care

Convenient Care is intended for non-emergency medical needs during regular business hours (M-F, 7:30 am-4 pm), when your primary care provider isn’t available. An appointment is required, so be sure to schedule one by calling (217) 357-0617.

This option works well for minor illnesses that do not require urgent attention.

For instance, if you’re dealing with mild cold symptoms and need a same-day visit or a doctor’s note for work, Convenient Care is the right option for you. Think of it as a helpful bridge between your regular doctor and the Walk-in Clinic.
