Animals, the arts, being in nature + finishing a medical “self-help” book with my colleague and friend, Adam Huber + starting a book with Rose Winters (CEO of The Foundation for Living Medicine, started by my mentor of 35+ yrs, Dr Gladys McGarey) that picks up her biography from where the book her daughter wrote about her (Born to Heal) and published on her 79th birthday and finishes it through her 104th year (she died 2mos shy of her 104th birthday on 9-28-24).

I wrote a combined 5-yr DO/ND curriculum in the 1990’s that almost got implemented. I re-wrote my medical school curriculum to be more humane during my 2nd year of med school, as well as started a Wellness Program for 1st and 2nd yr med students that same year (1984).  I was also fortunate enough to do two of my clinical rotations in my 4th year of med school w/Bernie Siegel, MD (author of Love, Medicine and Miracles) at Yale, as well as sit in on his eCAp (exceptional cancer patient) groups, a truly extraordinary experience.

I started out wanting to be a teacher (based on my experience w/ my 4th/5th grade teacher, Mrs. Mincey. My mother had cancer x 2 in the 1950’s, and both of her surgeries were disfiguring, impacting how she felt about herself for the rest of her life. By the time I was 16 and went to my HS counselor and told him I wanted to be a doctor, he told me to “forget it – only 2% of people in med school are women [1963], and they got there b/c their fathers were doctors or their parents have money. Since neither is true in your case, choose something else.” I recall going home in tears. My father said: “don’t worry about it. If it’s meant to be, you’ll find a way.” 20 yrs and 3 careers later (teaching, social work and marriage and family counseling, I was in med school!
