Primary Responsibilities

  1. Follow laboratory procedures, hospital policies, Joint Commission and College of American Pathologist standards.
  2. Receiving patients and verifying patient information in a courteous manner.
  3. Releasing or transcribing provider orders for laboratory tests on appropriate account for day of service.
  4. Selecting the appropriate collection containers for laboratory tests ordered.
  5. Obtaining laboratory specimens through proper phlebotomy techniques on all ages of patients (neonates, toddlers, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors) while also requiring excellent communication skills to comfort patients during the procedure.
  6. Ensuring samples are acceptable, properly labeling specimens and accessioning them into the laboratory for testing.
  7. Providing “how to” instructions and containers for collection of samples at home by patients.
  8. Creating Hospital Outpatient Visit (HOV) encounter for specimens sent from outside facilities like clinics, nursing homes, etc. and processing them accordingly.
  9. Become competent and maintain competency in all departments of the laboratory to work as a generalist.
  10. Ensure that quality control, calibrations, maintenance and proficiency testing in the laboratory is completed according to laboratory policies and procedures.
  11. Maintains that the work area is safe, clean and orderly at all times.
  12. Effectively and professionally communicate guidance to other lab staff, providers, nursing staff or other hospital staff when questions or concerns arise.
  13. Aids in maintaining inventories of necessary supplies ensuring minimizing waste and unnecessary costs.
  14. Ensuring that all laboratory supplies are used before their expiration date and that expired materials are discarded properly.
  15. Receives laboratory supplies ordered through the storeroom and puts them away in their designated area.
  16. Maintain good communication and mutual respect to ensure good working relationships with coworkers in all departments of the hospital including within the laboratory.
  17. Effectively communicates any customer concerns, specimen issues or other outliers to the Laboratory Supervisor and/or the Laboratory Administrative Director and documents said outliers.
  18. If assigned, takes on duties for oversight of a section within the laboratory.

Required Qualifications

  1. MLT: Associate’s degree in chemical, physical, biological science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
  2. MLS: Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, physical, biological science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution.
  3. Successfully passed the ASCP/AMT registry exam within 6 months of the hiring date at Memorial Hospital or current ASCP/AMT certification

Full or Part Time: Full Time

Wage Range:

MLT: $22.35-$28.45/hour (plus any applicable shift differential)
MLS: $25.50 – $32.50/hour (plus any applicable shift differential)
(Actual wage based on relevant experience)

Status:  Full time (40 hours/week)

Schedule:
Weekdays: Varies
Weekends: Rotating weekends and holidays
