Community Benefits

We are a part of what makes our community strong

Memorial Hospital is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to maintaining and improving the health of all people in the Hancock County area. Governed by a board of directors, we serve as a vital safety net, serving our communities with access to quality healthcare services.

One of the many ways Memorial Hospital brings value to our community is through our Community Benefit programs. We realize these are challenging financial times and Memorial Hospital continues to fulfill its mission to provide quality healthcare to our community through charity care, community health fairs, educational events and free health screenings.

Memorial Hospital provided over $4.5 million in Community Benefit in fiscal year 2018. We provided more than $3.0 million in financial aid for patients who are uninsured/underinsured and lack the ability to pay for care.  We paid $14.5 million in payroll and benefits and invested nearly $2 million  ($1.975 million) in equipment, buildings and land. This investment is returned to our communities, impacting our local economy.

Memorial Hospital employees serve a vital role in local workforce development and youth mentoring in the health careers. In total, our employees provided more than 6,000 hours of hands-on mentoring with area students, some interested in health careers, and some through our involvement with the school co-op program. Memorial Hospital also has partnerships with Kirksville School of Osteopathic Medicine and Carl Sandburg School of Nursing. In addition, we also host high school leadership groups and CEO classes.

Our employees donate thousands of volunteer hours each year to many worthy community programs and organizations within our communities. We host a blood drive each year and support other blood drives throughout our communities.

Memorial Hospital provides necessary meeting space for many area support groups and community programs, including Helping Us Give Support of Hancock County (HUGS), Agency Collaboration Team, Hancock County Addiction Coalition, Hancock County Red Cross, AA, NA, Scout Troops, and many more.

We are proud to continue our strong commitment to being at the heart of our community.
